  • Employment Verification: You must hold a valid contract, letter of appointment, or letter from the ship agent/owner indicating the vessel's, arrival/departure details.
  • Electronic Verification: EU countries may mandate electronic verification of Certificates of Competency (CoCs) to ensure they are valid and recognized by the EU.
  • Arrival/Sign-On Procedure: Upon arrival at a port or airport, a "meet & greet" service is frequently required, and the ship agent will handle immigration formalities.
  • Sign-Off/Exit: Upon leaving, the seafarer must be officially signed off, and the visa closed if a Schengen visa was used

Important Notes:

  • Shore Leave: Valid seaman's books allow for temporary shore leave, but this is at the discretion of the port authority and subject to immigration rules.
  • Crew Changes: Many European ports use automatic biometric systems (fingerprints/facial recognition) linked to crew lists.
